The City of Carroll hosted a meet-and-greet with the three finalists in the community’s search for a new fire chief on Thursday evening. The candidates are Carroll Fire Department Assistant Chief Dan Hannasch, Fort Dodge Fire Department Lieutenant Jon Schreck, and Carroll Fire Department Lieutenant Brad Warnke. Each candidate gave a short presentation on their background in firefighting and what sparked their interest in the fire chief position, beginning with Hannasch.
Hannasch joined the Carroll Fire Department in 1993 as an entry-level fireman, rising to lieutenant, then captain, to become the assistant chief. Schreck joined the Fort Dodge Fire Department in 2015 and spent the six years before that on the Carroll and Webster City Fire Departments. He is also the Hazmat Technical/Educator for Region V Hazmat and is an adjunct professor in fire science at Iowa Central Community College. Schreck, who is the son of current Carroll Fire Chief Greg Schreck, says fighting fires has become something of a family business.
The final candidate, Warnke, joined the Carroll Fire Department in 2006 and served as the field staff instructor for the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau until recently. He attended Kirkwood Community College and studied Fire Science. Warnke joined the Carroll Fire Department as soon as he turned 21, the youngest age they allow. Warnke says the fire department has become his second family, and he would be honored to lead them.
Finalist interviews are scheduled for today (Friday). Officials expect they will be ready to announce their chosen candidate by early next week.
