As the Breda American Legion Post #607 prepares to celebrate 100 years since its founding, the veterans’ organization is expanding to include a new chapter of the American Legion Riders. The Legion Riders were created in 1993 as a motorcycle enthusiasts’ group within the existing American Legion organization and have spread throughout the nation for the last three decades. Breda’s chapter held its first meeting on May 1, and Chairman Gary Schmitz says they are looking to grow their membership.
Beyond a connection to the American Legion and a love for motorcycles, Schmitz says the only other requirements to become a Legion Rider are a minimum 350cc bike that is insured and a valid motorcycle license. The chapter meets once per month to schedule events and fundraisers. It shares the same goals as the American Legion: to support veterans, veterans’ families, and their communities. One such example is the Legion Riders’ annual Legacy Run.
Funds raised through the Legacy Ride provide scholarships to post-9/11 veterans who died on active duty or have a disability rating greater than 50 percent. Schmitz says they plan to participate in other events recognizing soldiers, police officers, firefighters, and other first responders, such as Rockwell City’s Hometown Heroes Memorial Ride hosted last weekend. Schmitz says an interesting aspect of the Legion Riders is members do not need to be a part of the sponsoring post to join the local chapter.
