Carroll Man Sentenced Last Month On Child Sex Abuse Charge Files Notice Of Appeal

A Carroll man ordered to serve up to 25 years in prison last month after pleading guilty to felony sexual abuse is appealing his sentence. Seventy-eight-year-old Raymond John Miller was sentenced May 25 in Carroll County District Court on a single count of second-degree sexual abuse, a class B felony. He initially faced three felony counts following his arrest last September after a Carroll Police Department investigation determined he had sexually abused three minor children between Jan. 1, 2007 and Dec. 31, 2015. Miller’s notice of appeal has been submitted to the Iowa Supreme Court, where they will determine if the request will be rejected, referred to the Iowa Court of Appeals, or taken up by the state’s highest court. The notice of appeal does not specify on what grounds Miller is appealing the district judge’s sentencing order. Miller is currently serving his sentence at the Iowa Medical & Classification Center in Coralville. The earliest he could be released is October 2039 at the age of 96 if his appeal is denied.
