Gerald F. “Jerry” Berg, age 89, of Arcadia, died Monday, July 4, 2022, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 8, 2022, at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia. The Celebrant will be Fr. Terry Roder. Music will be by Sharon Bierl and the St. John’s Choir. Lector will be Jerome Henkenius. Eucharistic Minister will be Julie Eich. Casket Bearers will be members of the Arcadia American Legion. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors conducted by the Arcadia American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, after 5 p.m. on Thursday. There will be a rosary prayed at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at the funeral home in Carroll from 9-945 a.m. Friday morning. Born on January 10, 1933 in Carroll County, Iowa, Jerry was the son of Joseph H. and Christine (Leiting) Berg. He grew up northwest of Arcadia and attended St. John’s School. After his formal education, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to the Arcadia area where he worked in construction and was engaged in farming for over 60 years. On January 11, 1958, Jerry was united in marriage to Marie Irlbeck at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia. The couple made their home northwest of Arcadia until moving into Arcadia in 2000.
Jerry’s passion in life was farming and he took pride in caring for the land and the animals. In addition, he enjoyed playing slow pitch softball and bowling for many years. He also enjoyed the occasional trip to a casino. He was a member of St. John Parish in Arcadia. He was also a member of the Arcadia American Legion for over 50 years, serving many years on the Board.
Left to celebrate his life is his wife of 64 years: Marie Berg of Arcadia; daughter Carol (Michael) Schrader of Willmar, MN; son Kevin of Westside; daughter Donna of St. Joseph, MO; and son Brian of Mason City, IA, granddaughter Melissa (Sean) Farris of St. Joseph, MO; step-grandson Michael Schrader, Jr. of Baltimore, MD, 3 great grandchildren and 2 step great-granddaughters.
Jerry is also survived by; siblings: Norma Goecke of Carroll, Vern (Pat) Berg of Lee’s Summit, MO, Helen (Ron) Sundrup of Arcadia, and Jim (Paulette) Berg of Arcadia; sisters-in-law: Linda Berg of Arcadia, Joyce Irlbeck of Westside, Linda Irlbeck of Westside, brothers-in-law: Luvern Steinkamp of Adams, MN and Allen (Sue) Irlbeck of Avoca, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Robert Berg, Don (Ardella) Berg, Joseph Dean Berg, Ron (Lorna) Berg; brothers-in-law: Jerry Goecke, Edwin (Marijane) Irlbeck, Larry Irlbeck, and Elmer Irlbeck, sisters-in-law: Alice Steinkamp and Lavon Irlbeck, and his parents-in-law: Albert and Elizabeth Irlbeck.
