Mary, the daughter of Melvin and Helen (Hinz) Wegner, was born on March 13, 1951, in Audubon, Iowa. She grew up near Audubon, Iowa and graduated from Audubon High School in 1969. After graduation she worked and lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1973 she moved back to Gray, Iowa where she met her husband Gary Weitl.
On March 1, 1975, Mary was united in marriage with her husband, Gary Weitl, at the Sacred Heart Church in Templeton, Iowa. They were blessed with 2 children, Sara and Jesse, raised in their family home in Templeton. Mary spent most of her working years at the sheriff’s office in Carroll and later working from home running their family business, Weitl’s Aeration, as office manager.
In 2010 Mary and Gary ecstatically transitioned into grandparent hood with the birth of their first grandchild Landon John Ferneding followed by Morgan Jean Ferneding in 2014, Mallory Kate Weitl in 2014, Maddox Evan Weitl in 2017 and Miles Thomas Weitl in 2020. Mary’s greatest joy in this world was her family and grandkids.
Throughout her life Mary enjoyed gardening, crocheting, camping with family and friends, playing cards, horseback riding and traveling. The last few years of her time with her family Mary’s greatest joys were spent hosting the grandkids with camping in her backyard, pool parties on the patio, golf cart driving lesson, golf cart rides around town and boating on the pontoon. She also enjoyed cutthroat weekends of card playing with her sisters.
She was affectionately known as Grandma & Grammy Bear. Mary would always tell her grandkids she loved them to the moon and back. She would also lovingly argue over “I love you more” whenever saying I love you to her grandkids and children. She often broke all parenting rules by enabling the grandchildren to quote her “Grammy’s house, Grammy’s rules” to their parents every time they wanted ice cream or a popsicle before meals. No was not a word often used in Mary’s vocabulary as a grandmother. Not near as much as she used it as a mother. That’s just what the best Grandma’s do.
Mary enjoyed horseback riding, camping, crocheting and spending time with family and friends.
Mary is survived by her husband Gary Weitl, daughter Sara Ferneding and her husband Gary along with their children Landon and Morgan and her son Jesse Weitl and his wife Katie (Witt) along with their children Mallory, Maddox and Miles: siblings Gary (Betty) Wegner, Connie Singsank, Dale (Linda Firebaugh) Wegner, Carolyn (James) Gress, Leslie (Sheryl) Wegner, LeRoy (Karen) Wegner and Randy (Julie) Wegner: brother & sister in laws Noreen Havermann, Janice (Paul) Klaus, Sharon (Ken) Wicker, Gene (Polly) Weitl, Dave (Kris) Weitl; many nieces, nephews, great niece, great nephews and other family.
