Barbara Ione (Steffes) McMains, age 72, of Altoona, IA passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines with her daughter and oldest granddaughter by her side.
A private family graveside service will be held on July 29, 2022 at the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.

Barb was born to Alvie and Hilda Steffes in Carroll, Iowa on October 29, 1949. She graduated from Carroll High School. She relocated to Des Moines, Iowa. She then married Thomas McMains and gave birth to a daughter in 1972. Barb was outgoing and a lot of fun! She was known for speaking her mind and being a strong independent lady. Her favorite pastimes were fishing, shopping, going to garage sales, and going to the casino. Her most favorite thing was spending time with her great-granddaughters. She also enjoyed a cold beer and listening to 50’s rock-n-roll music. Neil Diamond and Elvis were her favorites. Also, with a few of those closest to her she would stop and wait for the world to catch up to her.
Barb is survived by her daughter Jodi (McMains) Cooper; her granddaughters Laci (D.J.) Taylor, Tristin Dickey, and a grandson Jacob (Katie) Cooper; her great-granddaughters HazelKay Taylor, EmmaKay Taylor, and EmmyLou Cooper; two brothers Luke and Francis Steffes; nieces and nephew and many, many friends.
Barb was preceded in death by her husband Thomas McMains; her mother and father Alvie and Hilda Steffes; her two sisters Mary Irlbeck and Georgia Steffes; a stepson Robbie McMains; and two great-granddaughters RemmeLyn Ione Taylor and Baby Taylor. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
On July 29, 2022, her daughter and two granddaughters will be laying her to rest privately. Due to financial reasons, there will not be a service. However, there will be a celebration of life at her home in Altoona, IA at a date and time TBA.
