Carroll Says Goodbye Friday To Its Longtime Fire Chief, Greg Schreck

Tomorrow (Friday) marks the end of a 40-year career with the Carroll Fire Department for Fire Chief Greg Schreck. Schreck has spent his entire adult life involved in firefighting in some capacity, getting his start with the Templeton Fire Department in 1972 at the age of 18.

Much has changed since Schreck first started fighting fires 50 years ago. From huge advances in safety equipment to improvements in the training regimen, Shreck says the department of today looks very different from when he got his start.

Under Schreck’s direction, the Carroll Fire Department has become one of the premier volunteer departments in the state with top-of-the-line equipment, training, and volunteers. However, he says the department’s longstanding safety record is one of his proudest accomplishments. Beyond the occasional sprain, strain, or other minor injury, Schreck cannot recall any major injuries during his time as chief. He says that all stems from a specific incident early in his career.

After 40 years with the Carroll Fire Department, Schreck says the decision to step away was more difficult than he had initially imagined.

The public is invited to attend a retirement open house tomorrow (Friday) morning at Carroll City Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to wish Schreck well in his retirement. A special presentation is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Assistant Chief Dan Hannasch was hired to become the department’s next chief, and Schreck says he has been working to assist in the transition.
