It was standing room only at Carroll City Hall this (Friday) morning as family, friends, coworkers, and firefighters gathered to honor retiring Carroll Fire Chief and Chief Building Official, Greg Schreck. According to Mayor Mark Beardmore, few people in Carroll’s history have impacted the community more than Schreck.
Thanks to Schreck’s leadership, the Carroll Fire Department is well-positioned for years to come with a state-of-the-art fire station, top-notch equipment and trucks, and a dedicated team of volunteer firefighters. City Manager Mike Pogge-Weaver says Schreck’s impressive career is a model of public service.
City staff collected funds to purchase Schreck, who was wanting to attend a Major League Baseball game at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, tickets to the upcoming Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds match on Aug. 11. Current and former firefighters also presented a hand-crafted wood box containing Schreck’s bunker jacket, patches, and a commemorative engraved firefighter’s axe. Schreck thanked everyone for the outpouring of support.
Schreck’s career in firefighting began in 1972 with the Templeton Fire Department. He joined the Carroll Fire Department in 1982 and became fire chief in 1987. Dan Hannasch, who served as assistant fire chief under Schreck, was selected by city officials to fill the vacancy created by Schreck’s retirement.
