Margaret Behrens of Carroll

Margaret Behrens, age 88, of Carroll, died Thursday, July 21, 2022 at her home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Holy Spirit Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The celebrant will be Fr. Steve Brodersen. Music will be by Kathy Halbur. Cross Bearer will be Landen Yager. Lectors will be Terry Dickinson, Bill Prior, and Mark Schon. Gift Bearers will be Michelle Doerer, Katie Yager, Rachel Prior, Amanda Prior, Emily DeBolt, Sarah Vazquez, Amy Smith, Erin Whittom, and Anna Behrens. Eucharistic Minister will be Rose Behrens. Casket Bearers will be Chris Behrens, Joseph Luing, Dave Luing, Daniel Prior, James DeBolt, and Andrew Behrens. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Visitation will be held at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll from 5-7 p.m. on Monday. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church on Tuesday where visitation will continue from 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Born June 23, 1934, at Carroll, Iowa, Margaret was the daughter of John and Rose (Achatz) Hansman. She grew up on a farm near Willey and attended St. Mary’s School in Willey. On December 29, 1953 she was united in marriage to James Behrens at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willey, with Fr. H.J. Drees officiating.
The couple made their home southeast of Roselle where Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and was active in the family’s grain and livestock farming operation. The couple retired to the Carroll community in 1994.
Margaret enjoyed playing cards, baking, especially her homemade rolls and doughnuts, cooking, embroidery, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. Most of all Margaret enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Margaret volunteered for St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary and cleaning Holy Spirit Church for 15 years. She was a member of St. John Paul II Parish, a former member of Holy Angels Parish and Altar Guild in Roselle.
Survivors include her children: Dr. Arthur (Rose) Behrens of Carroll, Carol Luing of Bondurant, Marilyn (William) Prior of DeSoto, KS, Joleen (Mark) Schon of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Terry) Dickinson of Carroll, and Dr. Robert (Kelly) Behrens of Polk City; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Virgene Behrens of Carroll as well as other extended relatives and many friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband James Behrens; her son-in-law, Marlin Luing; parents; her parents-in-law, Henry and Mayme (Heithoff) Behrens; her siblings: Arlene (Donald) Behrens, Phyllis (Peter) Sibenaller, Melvin (Florence) Hansman, Marcella (George) Grossman, Lauris (Corrine) Hansman, Robert (Betty) Hansman, and Leroy Hansman in infancy. Her brothers-in-law: Robert Behrens in infancy, Harry (Dorothy) Behrens, and Virgil (Louise) Behrens; her sisters-in-law: Marie (Ed) Siepker, Florine (Harold) Eich, and Rita (Erwin) Vonnahme.
