The Carroll City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to install a new stop sign at the intersection of Court and 2nd Streets at last night’s (Monday) meeting. Police Chief Brad Burke says they’ve seen a higher-than-usual number of accidents at this particular uncontrolled intersection. Mayor Mark Beardmore says he sees plenty of traffic in this area of town, particularly when students are back in the classroom.
Burke adds the Court Street intersections at 1st and 3rd Streets both have stop signs so that a third one would match existing traffic controls.
City officials favored adding the new sign at 2nd and Court, but there was some disagreement on whether the required second and third readings be waived. At-Large Councilman LaVern Dirkx opposed moving too quickly, calling it “bad practice.”
The council voted unanimously to approve only the ordinance’s first reading and will bring the topic back for final approval at their Aug. 22 meeting. The city will notify adjacent property owners in the coming days to allow them the opportunity to provide feedback.
