Classes Start Tuesday For Area Schools; Motorists Asked To Use Increased Caution

The 2022/23 school year begins tomorrow (Tuesday) for all of our local school districts, and law enforcement is reminding drivers to be on the lookout for buses, student drivers, walkers, and bike riders. According to Carroll Police Chief Brad Burke, the most common issue is when vehicles pass a stopped school bus.

Drivers cited for a first-offense school bus violation are required to attend a court date and could face penalties as steep as a $900 fine and a 30-day license suspension. These penalties may seem harsh, but Burke says it is necessary when it comes to student safety. He adds it is not just buses drivers should be looking for.

Burke says best practice is to avoid driving near the schools when possible, particularly around pick-up and drop-off times.

He adds this is especially true during the first few weeks of classes as students adjust to the new school year.
