Iowa’s Water Summary Update for August 2022 shows another month of below-normal rainfall across the state. Last month’s average rainfall was recorded at 3.53 inches, about a half-inch lower than usual for Iowa. While statewide numbers were at least close to normal, some areas struggled more than others. For example, Keokuk in southeast Iowa recorded only 0.25 inches for the entire month. Iowa DNR Hydrology Resources Coordinator Tim Hall says, “Rainfall was below normal for the fifth consecutive month. The state needs above-normal rainfall for several months in a row, not another below-normal month.” Fortunately, recent trends show September and October as very wet months, which Hall says is a must if groundwater levels are to recover before winter. The Iowa Water Summary Update is prepared monthly by staff from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, DNR, U.S. Geological Survey, and others.
