Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) is launching a new grant program to reduce workplace language barriers. The Iowa Language Learners Job Training Program will provide funding to eligible employers to implement English language instruction that will support improved communication between staff. Five million dollars have been allocated for this initiative and geared toward specific language learning, such as work-related duties, policies, procedures, etc. To be eligible, applicants must be employers or groups of employers with at least 25 full-time workers who are expanding or creating a language program. IWD Director Beth Townsend says, “The ability to communicate is key to making any workplace connection successful. This grant opportunity is another great tool to help Iowa employers find the skilled workforce they so desperately need and support employees interested in improving their communication skills at work.” IWD is hosting an informational webinar on Tuesday, Oct. 11 to help potential applicants understand the new program’s requirements. Applications are due by noon on Dec. 2 to IowaGrants.gov.
