Republican State Senator Jason Schultz of Schleswig is seeking reelection in the upcoming midterm elections, but he will be doing so in a completely new district. Schultz previously represented Iowa Senate District 9 but is now running in Senate District 6, which includes Ida, Crawford, Carroll, Shelby, and Audubon Counties and a small section of Pottawattamie County. Schultz says the district’s demographics have not changed much, but constituents’ issues are somewhat different.
Schultz is a farmer by trade and also works as an insurance adjuster when not out in the field. He also served for seven years in the Iowa Army National Guard and with the Schleswig Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years. Schultz’s first venture into state politics began in January 2009 when he joined the Iowa House of Representatives for District 18. He served in that role until January 2015 when he was elected as a state senator. Schultz says his career has left him with unique perspectives on state government.
Schultz says he has gained a reputation for being unafraid to speak the facts regarding the issues, regardless of how others might perceive those facts. It can come off as harsh to some, but Schultz says this is the type of discourse that District 6 voters expect.
Schultz adds he has consistently advocated for fiscal and social conservatism at the state level, and he will continue to represent rural Iowa values if reelected.
Schultz is challenged by David Davis, a Libertarian from Harlan, for the District 6 Senate seat. Both candidates will appear during tomorrow’s (Wednesday) Carroll Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum at the Carroll High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The forum is open to the public and will also be broadcast on 1380 AM/95.1 FM KCIM and the Carroll Broadcasting YouTube and Facebook pages.
