The Carroll City Council heads back to the drawing board Monday night as they consider making a second attempt at state funding for improvements to Merchants Park. Previously, city officials had applied for $300,000 in Destination Iowa grants to complete approximately $1 million in improvements to the historic ballpark and current home for the 1A and 2A state baseball tournament. City Manager Mike Pogge-Weaver says their initial application was not approved, but they have not given up on it quite yet.
The City of Carroll has a contract with the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) to host state baseball through at least the 2024 season. Monday night will be Pogge-Weaver’s final council meeting as Carroll City Manager. He says the council will be taking a look at what, if any, changes they would like to make to the position.
City officials have contracted with Midwest Municipal Consulting to assist in the search for Pogge-Weaver’s replacement. They’ve laid out a relatively swift nine-week timeline that projects a new city manager to begin with the city sometime in January. According to Pogge-Weaver, one of the final items on Monday’s agenda is a closed session to begin union negotiations with city staff.
The Oct. 24 meeting begins at 5:15 p.m. at Carroll City Hall and is open to the public. It will also be broadcast via local access cable and the city’s YouTube channel. The full agenda and details on how to watch remotely are included with this story online.
