According to Burke, law enforcement is considering this incident as a self-defense situation but cannot go into specifics as the investigation is ongoing. Names of the parties involved have not been released. However, authorities confirmed the self-defense party is a resident of Fairview. Burke says the injured suspect was initially transported to St. Anthony Regional Hospital with injuries to the head from a .40-caliber handgun.

This is the second shooting at the Fairview Village Apartments in just over two years. In October 2020, an Ames man was shot in the leg during a dispute. City officials worked with the property owners and upped police patrols in the area following that incident.
