Bonnie Aschinger, age 97 of Wall Lake, IA, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2022, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake. Bonnie Leone Brotherson was born on December 3, 1925 to parents Arthur and Maude (McCoy) Brotherson in Crawford County at their farm home. Bonnie grew up on that same farm and attended Jackson #5 Crawford County Country School through the eighth grade. Bonnie then attended Wall Lake High School and graduated in 1944 at the top of her class. After graduation, she attended a year of nursing training at St. Anthony Hospital in Sioux City, IA. Bonnie was baptized in 1946 at the Vail Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Lake View and the Wall Lake Presbyterian Church where she served faithfully in Ladies Aid, as an Elder, and as a Sunday school teacher.
On August 31, 1945, Bonnie married Manuel Aschinger in Vail, IA, at the Presbyterian Manse. This union was blessed with three children: Paul, Karen, and Kevin. They raised their family on Manuel’s family farm north of Westside, IA. Bonnie was a farm wife/mother who enjoyed every bit of what she did. She loved being a homemaker and was an excellent cook. She was a gardener who always had a large harvest of fruits and vegetables she canned at the end of every summer. She enjoyed sewing and liked to golf in her spare time. She and Manuel loved to dance and frequented local dance halls weekly. She was the local Home Interiors sales lady for thirty five years, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. Bonnie loved animals, especially her dogs. She raised several kinds of purebred dogs for twenty years and was a founding member of the Iowa Pet Breeders Association. Bonnie was also a member of a local farm women’s club called the Busy Wrens. Bonnie officially retired at the age of eighty-five after working for several years through Experience Works, an organization that helps place the elderly into working positions.
Above all else, Bonnie placed her family and her love for them first. She loved any and all time spent with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. She was so very proud of them all. Bonnie moved off of the acreage and into town in Wall Lake in 2006 after Manuel passed away. She lived independently until 2019 when she then moved in with her son and daughter-in-law for eighteen months before moving to a care facility. She lived a full life; one full of love, ambition, faith, and devotion. She will be missed dearly by all who loved her.
