Lori was born June 4, 1958 in Carroll, Iowa to Glenn and Lucy (Roth) Lockhart. A lifelong resident of Carroll County, she graduated from Carroll High School in 1976. She married Mark Sturm in 1981 at the United Methodist Church in Carroll. They welcomed their first son Christopher that fall. Two more sons Gregory and Joseph, followed before daughter Amy was born. Lori worked multiple jobs throughout her life, including positions at General Electric and Pella Corporation. She was a bus driver for G-R School District and owner of the Glidden Locker and The Video Store in Glidden. She also worked at New Hope Village which she enjoyed immensely. In 2000, she was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis causing her departure from the workforce. This meant you saw less of Lori but she never lost her zest for life. She earned her Associate of Science degrees in Business Administration and Accounting Paraprofessional with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Buena Vista University in 2011. She was named to the BVU Graduate & Professional Studies Dean’s List.
Lori enjoyed baking, gardening, gambling, rock hunting, camping, bird watching, fishing and being outdoors. She loved being in the water and the one time she scuba dove, was a natural. More than that, she enjoyed her grandchildren. Lori advocated for herself and maintained her independence. She will be remembered for her strong will, resilience and laughing until she cried when something was really funny. She was extremely knowledgeable about a plethora of topics and was a closet Kansas City Chiefs fan. She was spiritual and believed in life after death and in the luck of a star note $100 dollar bill.
Lori was preceded in passing by her maternal grandparents Joseph and Evelyn Roth; paternal grandparents Charles W. and Gertrude Lockhart; her father W. Glenn Lockhart (2017), brother David Lockhart (2020), sister Lynn Lockhart (2011), parents-in-law Leonard and Dorothy (Peters) Sturm, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A limb has fallen from the family tree and said grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Left to carry on her memory is her husband of 41 years Mark Sturm; mother Lucy Lockhart of Carroll, IA; four children: Chris (Marie) Sturm of Glidden; Greg Sturm Megan Conrad of Atlantic, IA; Joe Sturm and fiancé Jullie McDermott of Denver, CO; Amy (Brady) Weerheim of Bondurant, IA; grandchildren Collin, Henry, Marshall and Levi Sturm, Kayla, Kayedance and Devlin Sturm, Benjamin and Alexander Weerheim along with several bonus grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews and other special family members.
The family extends a sincere gratitude to Dr. Greg Perkins, MD and Dr. Ugur T. Sener, MD for fighting alongside her these past eighteen months as well as Mayo Clinic Oncology and Radiology staff for the compassionate care given to mom no matter the appointment. Many thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their kindness and end of life care.
