Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2023 at St. Lawrence Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Kathy Halbur, Sherry Loughran, and Chelsey Goetzinger. Lectors for the Funeral Mass will be Lindsey Klocke, Susie Sheldahl, and Morgan Jones. Gift Bearers will be Paul’s great-grandchildren. Eucharistic Minister will be Dave Snyder. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Paul’s granddaughters Leah Teply, Susie Sheldahl, Jennifer Woods, Nikki Izer, Whitney Hinrichs, Kaitlyn Wieland, Angie Harder, Natalie Shirley, Lindsey Klocke, Alicia Henderson, Chelsey Goetzinger, Melissa Wallace, Morgan Jones, Mercedes Wieland, Samantha Sapp, and Lauren Wieland. Casket Bearers will be Paul’s grandchildren Joey Wieland, Tony Wieland, Brandon Shirley, Jacob Snyder, Josh Sapp, Casey Schmitz, Jackson Wieland, Zachery Wieland and Zayne Wieland. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll with a rosary at 6 p.m. Additional visitation will be from 9-9:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church.Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Paul’s family at www.sharpfuneral.com.

Paul was born on May 19, 1928 in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Mary (Kanne) Wieland. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1946 and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1952, following his honorable discharge he returned to Carroll and was united in marriage to Lorraine “Rainy” Masching on January 11, 1954 at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Carroll. Paul and Rainy made their home in Carroll where they raised their children. Paul was employed at Juergen’s Produce & Feed for over 50 years until his retirement.

He enjoyed playing cards, trips to the casino with his wife Rainy, and having coffee with his friends. Paul was a member of St. John Paul II Parish, Knights of Columbus and the Carroll American Legion.

Paul is survived by his children Bill (Lisa) Wieland of Johnston, Daniel “Boone” Wieland of Cedar Rapids, Ron (Carolyn) Wieland of Crete, NE, Becky (Dave) Snyder of Carroll, Connie (Mike) Sapp of Carroll, Tim Wieland of Johnston, Mary (Al) Schmitz of Halbur, Jim Wieland of West Des Moines, and Charlie Wieland of Richardson, TX; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; his sister, Beatrice (Richard) Pudenz of Carroll; his sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, Edna Ludwig of Carroll, Lois (Chuck) Neumayer of Carroll, Don Masching of Breda, and Joyce Masching of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended relatives.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lorraine “Rainy” Wieland in 2017; his great-great granddaughter, Eva; and his siblings: Sister Marian Wieland, F.S.P.A., Maxine Schultes, Dolores Pudenz and Don Wieland.
