Six Local Community Water Systems Recognized For Excellence In Water Fluoridation

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently presented six local water systems with the Water Fluoridation Quality Award from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The award recognizes communities and water suppliers for their longstanding commitment to maintaining consistent fluoride levels in drinking water. Fluoridation is considered one of the 20th century’s most significant public health achievements, as communities that utilize it see substantial improvements in their citizens’ overall oral health. Estimates suggest that every dollar spent on water fluoridation saves more than $20 in dental treatment costs. Local departments receiving the award include: Audubon Water Supply, Carroll Municipal Water Supply, Denison Water Supply, Manilla Municipal Service Department, Guthrie Center Municipal Water Works, and Jefferson Water Department. HHS Community Access Division Director Erin Drinnin says, “Fluoridation can assist in the prevention of cavities regardless of access to a dental provider. Fluoridation helps all ages and income levels, especially children and families who cannot get regular preventative care or dental treatment. I want to congratulate all 96 Iowa water systems for maintaining optimal fluoridation in their community. A link to see your community’s status is included below.
