A recent survey from the personal finance company, WalletHub, shows Iowans pay some of the highest overall tax rates in the nation. According to their data, Iowa has the sixth-highest rate behind Illinois, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and Kansas. WalletHub’s study found the median Iowa household pays $7,645 per year on state and local taxes, or 23.6 percent more than the national average. Iowa ranked 37th for income tax, 42nd for real-estate tax, 30th for vehicle property tax, and 29th for sales and excise taxes. When adjusted for the cost of living, Iowa’s rank improves to 36th in the country but is still well above the national average. WalletHub’s survey found the best state for taxpayers is Alaska, followed by Delaware, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming. A link to the full survey is included below.
