Barbara Ann Toyne of Glidden, formerly of Lake City

obitnew-2

Barb Toyne, age 91, passed away peacefully at her home in rural Ralston Friday evening, March 10, following a long illness.

Barbara Ann Toyne was born October 26, 1931, to parents Frank and Ruth Brownell of Lake City, Iowa. Following graduation from Lake City High School, she obtained her nursing degree from the University of Minnesota. On October 31, 1953, in an at-home ceremony, she married Daryl D. Toyne. With these significant autumn dates, it isn’t a surprise that Halloween was her favorite holiday, and orange was her favorite color.

Barb was a true partner on the family farm, spending her life as an active participant assisting with the livestock, fieldwork, and bookwork.

She was a member of the Lake City Baptist Church and in later life was affiliated with the Lanesboro United Methodist Church. Other memberships included the Heartfelt Quilters in Scranton, the Open Hand Extension Club, the Glidden Band Boosters, a fifty-year member of the Happy Hour Club and many enjoyed years with neighborhood pinochle clubs.

Her enjoyment of cards and games extended to her family. A fierce competitor, it was always a joy and a challenge to join Grandma at the table for a game. Other interests include quilting, of which she was a master, but to her mind, always a student. Her numerous quilts will always be treasured. She self-taught and mastered many other areas of handwork, including knitting, cross-stitch, embroidery, and needlepoint, all frequently worked on while watching sports. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, flowers, and bird watching and particularly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending as many of their activities as possible and following in other ways when she couldn’t. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband: Daryl Toyne of Glidden, IA; children: Alyson (Rich) Schroeder of Churdan, IA, Chris (Dave) Happe of Ames, IA, and Jocelyn (Kevin) Ord of Farmington, MO; grandchildren: Kimberly (Jerry) Manint of Omaha, NE, Nathan (Crystal) Schroeder of Gretna, NE, Ben (Bailey) Schroeder of Glidden, IA, Jeff Happe of Ames, Holly (Eric) Grootveld of Ketchum, ID, Kelsey (Micah) Greene of Des Moines, IA, Audra (Nate) Kingery of Ste. Genevieve, MO, Genna (Anthony) Souffle of Minneapolis, MN and Moriah (Kyle) Hix of Rolla, MO; great-grandchildren: Justin, Ethan, and Ella Happe, Bridger, Tinley, Sawyer, Katrien, Colter and Gideon Grootveld, Adalia Greene, Kara and Khloe Schroeder, Brody, Kayson and Avery Schroeder, Judah, Elijah and Amelia Kingery; sister: Cheryl (Gale) Neef of Pardeeville, WI and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Rosemarie (Marvin) Telleen, Janice (Burton) Russell, Elizabeth (Neil) Schreyer, and an infant brother, Thomas.

Visitation is Thursday, March 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lampe & Powers Funeral Home in Lake City, Iowa. Memorial service will be Friday, March 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lanesboro, followed by a graveside service at the Lanesboro cemetery.
