Property owners in Sac City are encouraged to complete a survey regarding water lines within city limits. Sac City officials are responsible for completing a comprehensive overview of the water service lines from the main to the meter. Administrator Jaime Lawrence says this is a rule and regulation enforced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Lawrence says the survey is for private lines that go into homes. The EPA uses the study to understand better the levels of lead and copper in public water systems. The EPA established the lead and copper rule to protect public health and reduce exposure to lead and copper in drinking water. Lawrence says it will be at their expense if property owners switch from lead and copper pipes. However, funding could be available in the future.
Lawrence notes currently, the state and federal government has not mandated the change. A link to the survey and information about the EPA’s lead service line replacement can be found included with this story on our website. Lawrence says this only affects individuals living within city limits, and anyone with any additional questions can contact city hall at 712-662-7593.
