Authorities in Storm Lake are investigating a reported check fraud scheme involving nearly a dozen suspects that resulted in almost $10,000 being lost. According to the Storm Lake Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Delicias Bakery Friday afternoon in response to suspicious activity. Authorities say between 10 and 15 Hispanic males presented payroll checks from a fictional account and fled the scene in multiple vehicles with the cash. Law enforcement believes the Storm Lake incident was part of a larger scheme perpetrated throughout northwest Iowa on March 17, including United Bank of Iowa in Sac City. Anyone with information about the unidentified males is asked to contact the Storm Lake or Sac City Police Departments via the tip lines included with this story on our website. Police say Friday’s incidents should remind check-cashing services to be vigilant for potential fraud and ensure the validity of presented checks.
