A woman from Sioux City has been sentenced to up to five years in prison by Carroll County District Court for stealing thousands of dollars through fraudulent checks and deposits. According to district court records, 38-year-old Rebecca Jo Thornton pleaded guilty to second-degree theft, a class D felony, in March. According to an affidavit filed by the Carroll Police Department, Thornton stole nearly $5,000 from the victim in June 2022 and attempted to fraudulently deposit $1,200 into an account at Commercial Savings Bank. Thornton’s five-year sentence will run consecutively with a separate five-year sentence she received in 2020 from Calhoun County District Court for a previous felony theft conviction.
