The post-conviction relief request trial for a Carroll man imprisoned on felony sexual child abuse charges has been scheduled for later this year. According to Carroll County District Court records, 79-year-old Raymond John Miller was convicted in May 2022 on the class B felony count after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors and ordered to serve at least 17.5 years minimum of the 25-year sentence. Authorities say Miller abused multiple juveniles between 2007 and 2015, all under the age of 12 when the crimes occurred. Miller filed his post-conviction relief request in December on the grounds of ineffective assistance of counsel, claiming his attorney misled him during the plea process and failed to file a timely appeal of the conviction. Miller’s post-conviction relief request non-jury trial has been scheduled to commence on Aug. 29 at the Carroll County Courthouse. Miller remains in custody at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville, having served only one year of his sentence.
