The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education discussed safety improvements to all the attendance centers within the district at Monday’s work session. According to Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau, a company named Tetra Tech was contracted by the state of Iowa to do the assessments. Berlau says when the company looked at each building individually, they broke it down into three categories.
Berlau broke down each section and what improvements needed to be made in each area. He says in detection, there are five main target points for improvements.
Other items in the detection category were upgrading exterior lighting and improving visitor management in each building. Four items were brought up in the delay category, and they were: upgrading door locks on classrooms, vehicle barriers in the front of buildings, glass hardening measures, and entry control door hardware upgrades. Only two items were brought up in the response portion, and they were more security signage and training for staff on standard response. With the school doing the safety assessment through the state, they are eligible for a $50,000 grant that will pay for the security improvements.
