Former South Carolina Governor and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley was in Denison today (Tuesday) as the 2024 Iowa Caucus season officially kicks off in the area. Haley is one of only five Republicans that have announced their candidacy for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination. Haley, the daughter of two immigrant parents from India, was born in a small town in South Carolina called Bamberg and earned an accounting degree from Clemson University. She says the advice her mother gave her at a young age is something she will take with her into the White House.
Haley’s career in politics began following a stint in the corporate world.
Haley was first elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2004 and served three terms. In 2011 she served as the 116th Governor of South Carolina till 2017. Haley then served as United Nations Ambassador from January 2017 through December 2018 under the Trump Administration. Haley says when she took over as Governor in 2011, the state was hurting from unemployment, and when she left, it was an economic powerhouse.
Haley says she is running because she wants America to be strong, proud, and full of opportunities again.
Haley made her comments in Denison on Tuesday at an event hosted by the Crawford County Republican Women. She was joined by Senator Joni Ernst and Iowa 4th District Representative Randy Feenstra. Full audio from the event can be found included with this story on our website.
