Anna Maria (Mergen) Johnston was born in Gainesville, Germany on April 25, 1933, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Fries) Mergen.  Anna went by the name Maria in her young age so as not to be confused with her mother Anna and as years went by, she kept the name.  Maria is one of eleven siblings: Lenche, Bernhard, Margrete, Imgard, Fanz, Werner Sr, Werner Jr, Alvis, Erich, and Agnes. Anna went to school in Germany and came to the United States in 1959 at which time she married Lloyd Johnston on July 2, 1957.  Lloyd and Mara moved to Carroll, Iowa in 1969 where they finished out their lives together.  Maria loved spending time with her family, enjoyed cooking and baking pies for family gatherings and talking about her family in Germany.  Among Maria’s hobbies were knitting, cross stitching, camping, and watching movies with her great grandchildren.  Maria had worked for different companies in the Carroll area, among a few were the Red Carpet Lounge, the Minchen House and the Carrollton Inn.  Maria was the type of person that didn’t care who you were or what you did, if you needed help, she would always help.

Maria is survived by 3 of her siblings (Lenche, Bernhard and Margrete), her five children: Gerd (Kim) Johnston, John (Penny) Johnston, Bob Johnston, Kathy (Mike) Lampe and Marina (Mark) Weber, eight grandchildren: Aaron, Justin, Tyler, Amber, Jeremy, Joshua, James and Christina and 7 great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Anna Mergen, her husband Lloyd in 1997; siblings: Imgard, Fanz, Werner Sr, Werner Jr, Alvis Erich, and Agnes; and 2 granddaughters Amy and Ashley Johnston.
