Virginia Hagemann of Carroll

Virginia Ann Hagemann, age 87, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at St. John Paul II Parish – St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Merlin Schrad as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Tim Murphy. Lector for the Mass will be Glenn Wiedenhoeft. Gift bearers will be Virginia’s family. Casket bearers will be Ben Wiedenhoeft, Rochelle Wiedenhoeft, Sarah Wiedenhoeft, Dick Wernimont, Zach Bachman, and Cam Janson. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Visitation will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church from 5 – 7 P.M. on Friday evening where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 6:30 P.M. Additional visitation will be held at St. Lawrence Church from 9:30 A.M. – 10:15 A.M. on Saturday prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fr. Kuemper Society.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com

Virginia was born on December 8, 1935 in Carroll, IA, and she was the daughter of Leo and Eva (Meyer) Fiedler. Her family lived south-east of Scranton until her mother’s death when Virginia was seven years old. Her family moved to Carroll and her father hired Miss Genevieve Happe to care for the children. Virginia graduated from St. Angela’s Academy in 1953 and from St. Anthony School of Nursing in 1956. She worked in the O.B. Department at St. Anthony Hospital for several years following her marriage to Hubert Hagemann on June 1, 1957 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carroll by Msgr. Lynch. The couple lived in Carroll for a short time before moving to a farm north of Carroll. Virginia and Hubert moved to the Hagemann family farm in January of 1960 and Virginia continued to work as a nurse for one year before becoming a full-time mother and farm wife. She was very active in the farming operation and also did a great deal of volunteer work over the years. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and the St. Lawrence Guild. She was also a member of the Women’s League of Voters, the Carroll Republican Women, and the Carroll County Republican Central Committee. She served on the Carroll County Extension Council. She was a 4-H leader for over 50 years and served as a judge for a number of county fairs including the Clay County Fair and the Iowa State Fair. She was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2013. Virginia clipped thousands of coupons over the years for 4-H and was recognized for her dedicated service in helping many military families in Germany by the Breda American Legion. Volunteering was Virginia’s passion and she attended many Carroll County Board of Supervisor’s meetings and school board meetings over the years. She was also a dedicated member of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary.

Virginia is survived by her husband Hubert of rural Carroll; three daughters and their families: Dr. Mary Wiedenhoeft (Glenn) of Ames, Dr. Julie Hagemann-Singh (Ajay) of Westmont, IL, and Dr. Lora Hagemann of Hamilton, New Zealand; two grandchildren: Ben Wiedenhoeft (Sarah) and Rochelle Wiedenhoeft; two great-grandchildren: Jackson and Ruby; two brothers: Richard Fiedler (Lenore) of Scranton and Francis Fielder (Anita) of Colorado; a sister Loretta Nees (Duane) of Ohio; a sister-in-law Lorraine Hoffman (Edward) of rural Glidden; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her mother Eva Fiedler; her father Leo Fiedler; her stepmother Jean Cavanaugh – Fiedler; and her caregiver Genevieve Happe.
