Alvin “Al” Riesberg of Carroll

Alvin “Al” Andrew Riesberg, age 74, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2023 at his home in Carroll surrounded by his family.

A public visitation will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 5 – 7 P.M. at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 7:00 P.M.

A public graveside service will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 30, 2023 with military honors conducted by the Arcadia American Legion.  Casket bearers will be Kyler Riesberg, Michael Riesberg-Timmer, Doug Renze, Dennis Bauman, Randy Brockman, and Terry Jensen.   A reception will be held at the Moose Lodge in Carroll from 2 – 4 P.M. on Sunday following the graveside service.

Big Al, as he was known to many, was born on January 29, 1949 on his family’s farm near Templeton, IA.  Al was the son of Herbert and Mary (Sturm) Riesberg.  He grew up on the farm and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1968.  Al attended college Ft. Dodge and served in the Iowa National Guard following high school. He then lived in Des Moines for 2 years where he worked for Younkers.  He was married to Jackie Smith on August 2, 1969 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll.  The couple has lived in Carroll their entire married life.  Al was a hog buyer for John Morrell in Audubon and more recently for Wickman Pig of Westside.  He also traded commodities for Gene Vincent in the 1980’s.  Al was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, the Arcadia American Legion, and the Carroll Moose Lodge.  He enjoyed golf, trading stocks, playing cards and trips to the casino, but most of all spending time with his family.

Al is survived by his wife Jackie of 53 years of Carroll; his children and their families: John Riesberg (Lynn) of Carroll, Jennifer Riesberg-Timmer (Ray) of LaPorte City, IA, and Steven Riesberg (McKenzie) of Carroll; ten grandchildren: Jake, Morgan, Kyler (Leah), Rylie, Michael, Hayden, Rhyan, Kaden, Aerington, and Dane; two great-grandchildren: Kyson and Lainey and one on the way;  two brothers: Arthur Riesberg (Linda) of Exira and Al’s twin brother Melvin Riesberg of Las Vegas, NV; a sister-in-law Mickey Blum of West Chester, IA; a brother-in-law Dan Schaben of Harlan, IA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Al was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Mary Riesberg; his father and mother-in-law: Raymona and John Smith; sister Darlene Schaben; and a brother Dennis Riesberg.
