Three Carroll High School (CHS) students are advancing to the National History Day finals following their outstanding performance at the state contest earlier this week. Kylie Janning, Aliya Reed, and Sophia Tidgren centered their entry on the work of Frederick Banting and Charles Best, two of the key players who discovered insulin and revolutionized the treatment of diabetes. The group presented Monday at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. In June, they will travel to College Park, Md. to the University of Maryland campus just outside our nation’s capital to compete against nearly 3,000 students from around the world. The program teaches students essential skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving skills, research and reading skills, oral and written communication skills, presentation skills, self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of responsibility for and involvement in the democratic process. The National History Day in Iowa program is coordinated by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and sponsored by the State Historical Society, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Bravo Greater Des Moines.
