Born on August 12, 1959, in Sac City, Iowa at Loring Hospital, she was the daughter of Joseph J. and Marian E. (Berger) Drey.  Joanie grew up in Early where she attended Sacred Heart School, later graduating from Storm Lake St. Mary’s School in 1977 where she was the homecoming queen.  While in high school, she excelled in basketball; coincidentally scoring 54 points against Breda – St. Bernard’s, a community she lived in & loved dearly her entire lifetime following her marriage.  Following high school, she attended Iowa Lakes Community College for Secretary Office Administration.  On April 19, 1980, Joanie was united in marriage to Bob Buelt at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early.  To this union were two sons, Nick and Jake.

Joanie was employed with The Breda News, Breda Fertilizer, and Buelt Hatchery. Most recently she served Christ the King School and Kuemper Catholic Schools for over 25 years as secretary for 4 different school presidents during her tenure.  Joanie enjoyed bowling, playing cards (particularly Boo-Rah), and golfing where she recorded a hole-in-one on Hole 2 at the Breda Golf Club.  She also loved walking around Breda, watching the Cubs, College Basketball, or just socializing at Red’s Place or the Breda Golf Club while enjoying a Miller Lite.  Her greatest love however was her family and being instrumental in their lives.

Joanie is survived by her husband Bob Buelt of Breda; sons, Nick (Courtney) Buelt of Omaha, NE, and Jake Buelt of Breda; her grandchildren: Noah, Jonas, Levi, and Ezra; her siblings: Donna (Doug) Carlson of Early, Marv (Therese) Drey of Des Moines, Biz (Rhonda) Drey of Early, Kevin (Sue) Drey of Pella, Alan (Linda) Drey of Sioux City and Marilyn (Brent) Peters of Lake View; her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Mary Drey of Storm Lake, Kay Davis of Seattle, WA and Rosie (Rod) Wiederin of Oro Valley, AZ; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends.

Joanie was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Marian Drey; her parents-in-law, Leo and Leone Buelt; her brother, Dave Drey; a sister in infancy, Barbara Drey; her sister-in-law, Mary Jo (Bob) Haller; and her brothers-in-law: Don Davis and Lee Buelt.
