Alan Randall Thompson, age 78, of rural Scranton, IA, departed at rest and at peace on Friday, April 28, 2023 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at the Glidden United Methodist Church with Rev. Ben Carter-Allen officiating. Organist and soloist for the service will be Mary Ross. Burial will be in the Dillavou Cemetery near Scranton.
Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden from 5 – 7 P.M. on Tuesday evening. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the service.

Alan was born on November 12, 1944 in Boone, IA. He was the son of J. Earl and H. Ilene (Beckett) Thompson. He grew up in Boone County and graduated from Boone High School in 1963. He attended Boone Jr. College and graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. After graduating, he drove truck and ran heavy equipment for Hallett Construction until March of 1968 when he went to work as a carpenter for Eldon Krug in Boone.
He married Pamela Kernen on June 30, 1968 at First Baptist Church in Boone. The couple made their home on a farm north of Boone. Alan and Pam purchased 180 acres in Carroll County and moved there in September 1971. Their son Kyle Alan Thompson was born April 5, 1975. He farmed and did carpenter work alone for six years and then left farming and started Circle A Construction. Alan worked full-time with his crew in Carroll, Greene, Boone, and Guthrie counties as a general contractor until 2020 when he retired. He owned Coon Rapids Lumber and Farm for 15 years and sold it in 2017.
Alan was a Cub Scout leader, Carroll County Fair Board member, and Carroll County Farm Bureau Director. He was a member of the Glidden United Methodist Church and served on the church Board of Trustees. Alan was instrumental in building the new church in 1995.
He was a member of the Minneapolis Moline Collector Club and served on the board as president for five years. He restored and collected Minneapolis Moline tractors and equipment for many years. He also enjoyed taking tractor rides, going to tractor shows with his collections, and making woodworking projects.
Alan is survived by his wife Pamela of 55 years; son Kyle Thompson (Brandy) of Scranton; two grandchildren: Jaron and Joseph Thompson; a brother Warren Thompson (Verna) of Akron, IA; a brother-in-law Randy Kernen (Sherry) of rural Glidden; a niece Rachel Meshek (John); and a nephew Daniel Kernen.
He was preceded in death by his parents J. Earl and H. Ilene Thompson; his infant sister Jurhee Thompson; his father and mother-in-law Frederick Randolph and Helen Kernen; and a nephew Matthew Kernen.
