Wayne was born August 25, 1926 to Theodore (Ted) and Mary Harmening of rural Lidderdale, the oldest of 4 children. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale.

Wayne graduated from Carroll High School in 1943 and immediately enlisted in the Army, serving in World War II.  After serving his country, Wayne came back to Lidderdale and farmed at first, but then found his true calling for the work of his life as an abstracter.

Wayne married Lois Bruhn of rural Charter Oak, IA on February 24, 1957. Together they raised 4 children, and after much travel and love, Lois died September 2, 1999.

Wayne worked for and then purchased Security Title and Investment Company in Carroll. He continued abstracting until his retirement and turned the company over to the capable hands of the next generation.

Wayne was active in his church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. He was a Rotarian, with the record for consistent attendance over 60 years. He sang in the Carroll Men’s Elks Chorus. Wayne served on the Iowa Land Title Association abstracting standards committee for decades, and served as ILTA president during the 75th anniversary of the association.

Wayne’s travels led him to Germany, where he met co-traveler, Barbara Vandenburgh of Milford, IA, at the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. They were married a year later at Camp Okoboji on October 30, 2005. Together, Wayne and Barbara traveled extensively, including a cruise around the world, and attended many high school and college sports and music activities of Wayne’s grandchildren.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Barbara, children, Rachel (Matthew) Ressegieu of Lenexa, Kansas, Lori Harmening of Carroll, Rita (David) Pedersen of Jefferson, and Mark (Penny) Harmening of Carroll, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, stepchildren Scott (Abeba) Vandenburgh of Seattle, Washington, and Alan Vandenburgh of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 2 step grandchildren, sister, Ruth Kalles of Tacoma, Washington, and brother, Denis Harmening of Story City.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Lois, and his brother Paul Harmening.

Faith. Family. Abstracting. Travel. All for love and the glory of God. Amen.
