Sunday marked the beginning of National Small Business Week, a time for Americans to reflect on and appreciate all the local, family-owned companies do for the nation’s economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, nearly half of all people are employed by a small business. Carroll Chamber of Commerce and Carroll County Growth Partnership Executive Director Kimberly Tiefenthaler says that only begins to scratch to surface of what these businesses do for their areas.

She adds small businesses are the ones who support little league teams, sponsor community events, and contribute in a variety of other ways to help local vibrancy. Tiefenthaler says it is worth spending a few dollars more in your home community, especially as the global marketplace becomes increasingly competitive.

National Small Business Week runs through Saturday, May 6, and Tiefenthaler encourages residents to make a concerted effort to try local first this week and throughout the year.
