The Carroll RAGBRAI committee announced today (Wednesday) the Pork Tornadoes, who describe themselves as “your girlfriend’s favorite band,” will be the headline act for the slate of entertainment planned for July 24. The band consists of Mason Grave on guitar and lead vocals, Cory Talbot on bass, Mike Schulte on drums, and Jerry Lorenson on keyboard. The group covers some of the most popular songs from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and today but with what they call a “beard pop” twist. Schulte explains.

The Pork Tornadoes are no strangers to RAGBRAI concerts, as the July 24 show in Carroll will be the fifth time the group has headlined during the iconic bike ride across Iowa.

The Pork Tornadoes get around, having played hundreds of shows in roughly 70 of Iowa’s 99 counties, including an appearance at the popular Stone Pier Concert Series. They’ve collected quite a following online, including more than 8.2 million views on YouTube of their cover of the country classic “Tennessee Whiskey,” originally recorded by David Allan Coe in 1981. One thing that stands out about the band is its unique name, and Schulte says its origin has a very Iowa story.

Schulte says he and his bandmates are already counting down the days until they play in Carroll.
