Mary Ann (Berning) Janning, 89, died Saturday, May 6th, at Garden View Assisted Living surrounded by family.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Holy Spirit Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll.  The Celebrant will be Fr. Patrick Behm.  Con-Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson.  Music will be by Kathy Halbur.  Lectors will be Payton Schultes, Stephanie Hackfort, and Kenna Soppe.  Gift Bearers will be Mary Ann’s Granddaughters.  Casket Bearers will be Mary Ann’s Grandson’s: Nick Janning, Chris Janning, Jack Janning, Joe Janning, Mitch Janning, Tanner Janning, Carter Soppe, Bennett Janning, Andrew Janning, and Casey Smick.  Honorary Casket Bearers will be Mary Ann’s Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren.  Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Visitation will be held at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.  A Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.

The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church on Thursday morning where visitation will continue from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Born January 28th, 1934, Mary Ann was the daughter of William and Anna (Jasper) Berning. She attended school in Breda and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1951.

On June 3, 1953, she married her high school sweetheart John J (JJ) Janning at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Breda. The couple spent their entire lifetime in the Carroll Area. Mary Ann held many jobs throughout her working career, including Super 8 Hotel, Paulines Cafe, and Mallard View, in addition to serving as a volunteer at St. Anthony Auxiliary, and assisting with her husband’s business, Janning Ceilings, LTD.

In retirement, Mary Ann and John owned and operated Westside Antiques in Westside, Iowa. Mary Ann enjoyed crocheting in her past, playing cards – especially solitaire, and bird watching, along with a little gambling now and then!

Prior to her husband’s death, she kept very busy with John maintaining their acreage with gardening and their flower and rock garden.

Mary Ann’s greatest pride and joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann is survived by her children: Terry (Karen) Janning of Carroll, Bill (Marla) Janning of Carroll, Rick (Karla) Janning of Scranton, Randy (Barb) Janning of Carroll, Ted Janning of Tucson, AZ, Pat (Mike) Soppe of Carroll, Larry Janning of Tucson, AZ, Kelly (Cindy) Janning of Carroll, and John (April) Janning of Scranton; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; her sister Agnes Tigges; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Dorothea Berning, Betty Berning, Bernie Janning, Lois (Dan) Mein, Julia Janning, Mary Lou Janning, and Diane Janning.

Mary Ann is preceded in death by her parents, William and Anna Berning; a grandson in infancy, Zachary James Janning; her siblings: Albert (Marian) Berning, Norbert (Marjorie) Berning, Wilfred Berning, Laverne Berning, Francis Berning, Larry (Viola) Berning, William Berning, Jr. and Leota (Al) Reiff.
