Approximately 41 student-athletes at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University (ISU) are in the middle of gambling violations. At Iowa, 26 students have been flagged across five different sports baseball, basketball, football, track and field, and wrestling. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation, while the Iowa Racing and Gambling Commission is keeping a close eye on things. University of Iowa Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz says there is little the university knows about the issue right now.

ISU had approximately 15 student-athletes flagged across the basketball, football, and wrestling programs. Iowa became the 11th state to legalize sports gambling in May 2019, and now 33 states have adopted sports gambling. Ferentz says gambling is something that is in everyone’s face.

As of Tuesday, no criminal charges have been filed in the investigation. The NCAA has strict rules regarding gambling on any college or pro sport. If the student-athletes are found to be in violation, they could lose their college eligibility. Ferentz made his comments Tuesday in Arcadia at the annual Carroll Area I-Club Banquet.
