Lakeside Man Faces Multiple Charges Following A Hit-And-Run Accident Leaving A Teenager Injured

A Lakeside man faces multiple charges following a hit-and-run Thursday in Storm Lake that seriously injured a teenager. Yesterday (Thursday) at approximately 2:30 a.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the 500 Block of Oates Street for a report that a 17-year-old male was struck by a vehicle while on the sidewalk. The vehicle involved in the accident was a 2006 Jeep Liberty, operated by 27-year-old Gerson Barrionuavo-Corbonel of Lakeside. Following an investigation into the incident, officers allege that approximately 15 minutes earlier, Corbonel was working as a clerk at Midtown in Storm Lake when the juvenile stole approximately $50 worth of liquor. The juvenile fled the store and followed the subject in the Jeep. According to law enforcement, Corbonel intentionally drove his vehicle off the roadway, striking the male juvenile, and fled the scene. Corbonel was later taken into custody and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a serious misdemeanor, reckless driving and operation without a valid driver’s license, simple misdemeanors. Corbonel was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail and held on a $3,600 bond. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and additional charges are pending.
