Iowa Department Of Health And Human Services Promotes Recreational Water Safety As Swimming Season Begins

With most swimming pools in Iowa now open for the season, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is reminding swimmers of the basics of recreational water safety. The pool can be an attractive destination during the hot summer months, but HHS officials say it is important to get out of the water at least once per hour. These breaks allow swimmers time to catch their breath, reapply sunscreen, use the restroom, and drink some water. Avoid swallowing pool water whenever possible, as it can contain disease-causing microbes, such as Cryptosporidium or Giardia.
