The Carroll City Council formally approved a $3.55 million bid from Rasch Construction, Inc. of Fort Dodge during last night’s (Monday) meeting to move forward with the Adams Street Reconstruction Project. Rasch Construction was the lowest of the three bids received by a significant margin and beat the estimate from McClure Engineering by nearly $200,000. Public Works Director Randy Krauel updates the project’s approximate total costs with the favorable bid.
The city council has allocated just over $4.07 million for the project, leaving $180,500 in excess available funding. Krauel says those dollars will be held in reserve to cover any unexpected expenses over the two-year project. Planned work includes total replacement of the roadway and underlying water and sewer infrastructure. He explains they will likely encounter unanticipated challenges when digging into infrastructure that is close to 100 years old.
Krauel and a representative from McClure Engineering cited examples such as remaining original brick paving, unexpected concrete collars around pipe couplers, and other similar problems. The council unanimously approved the $3.55 million bid and contract from Rasch Construction. Mayor Mark Beardmore says construction should begin soon, but the schedule is not set in stone.
City officials are scheduled to meet with Rasch Construction Tuesday afternoon for a pre-construction meeting, and a more specific schedule should be available in the coming days. Other items on Monday’s Carroll City Council agenda included Fiscal Year 2024 insurance renewals, street maintenance facility equipment purchases, and additional housing incentive programs in the community.
