Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags to half-staff today (Friday) for the burial of an Iowa soldier who died as a prisoner of war during the Korean War. Twenty-year-old Army Cpl. Delbert White of Ottumwa died in March 1951 in a North Korean POW Camp. His remains were recently identified through DNA analysis and returned home for burial. Services began at 10 a.m. Friday morning at the Reece Funeral Home with interment in the Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa. Reynolds says, “Corporal White’s dedication to serving our county is a true representation of an ordinary person who performed extraordinary deeds. His sacrifice, as well as his family’s, will not be forgotten. As we honor him by lowering our flags, we also remember all POW/MIAs who have yet to be returned home.” The Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
