The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education approved a proposal at last night’s (Thursday) meeting to relocate the district’s alternative learning center to the high school. The Riding On Another Road (ROAR) program currently operates out of the agriculture building at the corner of 5th and Clark Streets. High School Principal Kourtney Abbotts says students enrolled in ROAR already face challenges beyond a typical teenager, and separating them from the resources available at the high school only adds barriers.
Abbotts is proposing ROAR be moved to a classroom in the northeastern corner of the high school. In order to achieve the school-within-a-school model, Abbotts says they will need to install additional doors and security systems between ROAR and the rest of the high school.
The district received a bid for $7,906 from Walsh Door & Security to install the necessary equipment before the 2023-24 school year starts. Board Member, Kristen Lundstrom, says ROAR has a record of helping students get back on track and supports the idea.
The board unanimously approved the Walsh Door & Security bid and advanced the proposal to move ROAR to the high school site. Work is expected to be completed before the start of the 2023-24 school year in August.
