Local Unemployment Holds Below State/National Figures In May

Unemployment rates in the seven-county area slipped higher in May, but regional figures remain below state and national figures. Greene County recorded the lowest unemployment rate at 1.8 percent, a 0.1-point increase from April but 0.1-point lower than May 2022. Sac County’s unemployment climbed to 2.0 percent in May from 1.8 percent in April and held just over its 2022 rate. Audubon County’s rate also slipped higher to 2.1 percent from 1.9 percent in April. Carroll County fell in the middle of the pack at 2.2 percent unemployment, 0.2 points higher than the prior month and a half-point above May 2022. Calhoun, Guthrie, and Crawford County rounded out the local counties at 2.4 percent, 2.5 percent, and 4.4 percent, respectively. The average unemployment rate for the region in May was 2.5 percent. Iowa’s May unemployment came in at 2.7 percent, while U.S. unemployment was calculated at 3.7 percent. A link to Iowa Workforce Development’s full dataset is included below.
