Larry was born on February 6, 1945, in Carroll, Iowa. He grew up near Arcadia and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1963. As a young adult, Larry loved cars – fixing, driving, and sometimes racing! His favorite car was a 1958 Ford Fairlane. Larry met his future bride, Deanne Wiederhold, as a newborn in the St. Anthony Hospital Nursery in February 1945. Little did he know they would meet again in high school and be married on April 24, 1965, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home near Arcadia, where Larry was active with St. John’s Parish and served on multiple parish boards.
Larry was a lifelong farmer, with 2023 making his 57th year of farming. He was also a skilled carpenter and spent many years working at Custom Builders. He was very handy and put his numerous talents to work helping Deanne run Fine Things, building their home in Carroll, completing multiple remodeling projects for family and friends, and designing and building a new store for Fine Things.
Larry was a kind and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved sports and enjoyed coaching his kids when they were young. He also enjoyed boating and waterskiing and had a talent for teaching others how to ski. More recently, he was an avid spectator at his grandchildren’s events. He was a man of great faith and always ready to lend a helping hand and volunteer for an important cause. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, theater, road trips with his Mustang convertible, and good food and wine.
Larry always told his family he wanted a party when he died, so to honor his wishes, his family invites you to a celebration of life at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at his home in Carroll.
