Kay Anthofer of Coon Rapids

Kay M (Dorpinghaus) Anthofer, age 84, of Coon Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 26, 2023.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, July 1, 2023 at the St. John Paul II Parish – Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids with Fr. Patrick Behm as Celebrant.  Music will be by the Annunciation Choir with Diane Slater as organist.  Lector will be Carlene Dorpinghaus.   Eucharistic Minister will be Rhonda Reis.   Gift bearers will be her granddaughters Kathryn Robinson and Jessica Cooper.  Casket bearers will be her grandsons Alex Anthofer, Andrew Anthofer, Austin Anthofer, Caleb Shaw, Jonathan Anthofer, Jacob Anthofer, Matthew Hofbauer, and Joseph Hofbauer.  Burial will be in the Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids. 

A rosary will be held at the Annunciation Catholic Church at 4:30 P.M. on Friday, June 30, 2023.  Visitation will be from 5 – 7 P.M. at the church with a Christian Wake Service held at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will resume at the church on Saturday from 9:30 A.M. until 10:15 A.M.

Kay was born on August 10, 1938 in Lime Creek, MN, and was the daughter of Dr. Henry and Rachel (Houska) Dorpinghaus.  She was baptized, received first communion and was confirmed at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Fulda, MN.  She grew up in Minnesota until age 13 when her family moved to Coon Rapids. Kay graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1956.  She worked at Ocoma Foods and Farner Bocken following high school.  She was married to Michael Anthofer on April 18, 1964 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids by Fr. Robert Dougherty. To this union were born four children: Jeffrey, Timothy, Michelle, and Stephanie. Kay worked at the Garst Store in Coon Rapids for seventeen years; two years as manager. She then worked for Coon Rapids Ford for three years and then Syngenta Seeds in the quality assurance lab for ten years until its closing.

Kay was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church and was active in the church guild and served on the building committee for the parish hall. She was a charter member of the Coon Rapids Bowling Alley, the Red Hat Society, the Happy Homemakers Birthday Club, and the Coffee Group.  Going to coffee was a good place to go for a laugh. Kay enjoyed helping people get to doctor’s appointments, volunteering at Thomas Rest Haven bingo, and she was a member of the Kitchen Kluckers promoting the Coon Rapids Quasquicentennial. Kay helped organize Coon Rapids High School reunions from years 5-60 and had a great time doing it. She loved to travel and socialize with her many good friends. Kay loved living in Coon Rapids and was involved in the community. She served on the City Council for nine and a half years, the Parks and Recreation Board, and the Cable TV Board.

Kay is survived by her children and their families: Jeffrey (Jill) Anthofer of Coon Rapids, Timothy (Maggy) Anthofer of Ankeny, Michelle (Anthony) Hofbauer of Cambridge and Stephanie (Huw) Thomas of Egrement, England; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and expecting four on the way; a sister Eloise Hilgenberg of Waukee; a twin brother Keith (Carlene) Dorpinghaus of Coon Rapids; her in-laws Gladys Frazier of San Diego, CA, Bob (Vicki) Anthofer of Pleasant Hill, IA, Mary (Bob) Stessman of North Liberty, IA, Sandy Anthofer of Urbandale, Marianne Anthofer of Waukee, Kay Anthofer of Sarasota, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Henry and Rachel Dorpinghaus, her husband Michael; a brother Darle (Caroline) Dorpinghaus; her parents-in-laws Michael and Theresa Anthofer; brothers-in-law Merle Hilgenberg, Donald Anthofer, Jerry Anthofer, Paul Anthofer, Vernon Anthofer, and Sam Frazier.
