The Fourth of July holiday weekend kicks off in earnest tonight (Friday), and many Iowans are ready to celebrate our nation’s independence with some home fireworks displays. However, those displays may come with financial penalties depending on where you live, according to Carroll Police Chief Brad Burke. Firework sales have been legal in Iowa since 2017, but local governments can further restrict when and how they are used. Fireworks can be sold in Carroll, but most types are prohibited within city limits.
The Carroll Police Department started receiving fireworks complaints here and there a few weeks ago, but those numbers are anticipated to balloon over the weekend. Burke says it takes up a significant amount of the officers’ time when they should be focusing on public safety.
Burke adds that fireworks calls do more than pressure the department’s resources; they also come with some hefty penalties.
According to Carroll City Code, the minimum fine for a fireworks infraction is $250. Burke says if you want to enjoy fireworks this Fourth of July, it is best to attend one of the many sanctioned shows found throughout the area.
