During Monday’s meeting, the Carroll City Council voted unanimously to retire the Caroll Police Department’s K9, Eudoris. According to Police Chief Brad Burke, Eudoris began displaying balance issues in February 2023 that later progressed to limit the dog’s ability to run, climb stairs, or jump. Following multiple veterinary visits and examinations, it was determined Eudoris suffered from symptoms of a spinal infection that cleared with antibiotics, but the balance issue did not resolve. A veterinary specialist in Omaha, Neb. determined the canine had sustained a cranial endplate collapse in one of his vertebrae and diagnosed him with intervertebral disc disease. A $20,000 corrective surgery is available, but there is no guarantee of success. Burke recommended to the council Eudoris be retired and the department’s K9 handler, Officer Matt Kennebeck, take ownership. The council voted unanimously to approve Burke’s recommendation. Burke indicated the department will not immediately acquire a new K9 and will rely on the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office K9 when needed for the time being.
