Carroll Rec Center To Temporarily Pause Memberships Starting In August For Construction

The Carroll Recreation Center will temporarily pause membership fees beginning in August due to planned construction throughout the facility as the renovation and improvement project nears its end. According to Parks and Recreation Director Chad Tiemeyer, they tried to avoid any closures at the Rec, but supply issues and the construction schedule made that impossible. He says it does not make sense to charge members for amenities that are not available.

The Rec pool is expected to be closed for up to eight weeks while new drainage systems are fitted, and new HVAC infrastructure is installed. The gymnasium and weight room will likely be closed for about half that time while crews construct the ADA-accessible ramp and interior renovations. Tiemeyer says the short-term “free” memberships are a thank you to the Rec’s many users.

The Rec is expected to remain closed for about two months, from Aug. 1 to Oct. 1. City staff note they plan to set aside time at the Aquatic Center for water walking or lap swimming in the coming weeks. The membership pause will not affect fitness classes, and punches will still be used. Members wanting additional information should contact the Rec Center directly by calling 712-792-5400. The city council also approved the sixth change order for the project at their meeting last (Monday) night. Contractors will add three extra floor drains and emergency lighting around the pool for $7,303. With this latest change order, construction costs for the project have climbed to $6.488 million from the original bid of $6.265 million.
